STANZA 1

The way a crow

Shook down on me

The dust of snow

From a hemlock tree

EXPLANATION

The poet recalls a minor incident that affected his mood in this stanza. Once upon a time, the poet was hopeless and depressed. He was standing under a hemlock tree, but it is unclear whether the poet was standing or passing (the tree).

A crow perched on the tree suddenly shook it, and powdery snow from the tree revealed the poet.

STANZA 2

Has given my heart

A change of mood

And saved some part

Of a day I had rued

EXPLANATION

The powdery snow that fell on the poet lifted his spirits. Previously, he had been depressed and sad.

The poet had previously spent a portion of his day in sadness, but now he begins to feel refreshed.

This incident averted a portion of the poet’s day that he would have otherwise wasted in regret.
