The September Massacres occurred in September 1792 during the period of the French Revolution. A warning was issued that if King Louis XVI and his family were harmed, the French would face severe consequences. This led to widespread anxiety and rage in Paris, especially among the revolutionary factions. In their fear that the prisoners, who were mainly counter-revolutionary priests and aristocrats, might be released and conspire against the revolution, the revolutionaries decided to take extreme action.
From September 2 to 7, 1792, revolutionary mobs stormed the prisons of Paris, murdering between 1,200 and 1,400 prisoners, including 233 priests. The Paris Commune, which was in charge of the city at the time, did not intervene to stop these killings. The massacre spread to other prisons across France, where similar events occurred, marking a period of brutal repression against perceived enemies of the revolution.
The September Massacres were significant as they highlighted the extreme measures that the revolutionaries were willing to take in their fight to protect the revolution. It also marked a turning point in the revolution, leading to the abolishment of the monarchy and the establishment of the First French Republic later that year. The killings were later condemned by some, but they represented the deep division and violence that marked the French Revolution during its most radical phases.
