Chapter 05: The Snake and the Mirror

by Vaikom Muhammad Basheer

Summary of the Chapter

  • Doctor Sees his Face in Mirror

The narrator, a doctor, describes his encounter with a snake. It was a hot summer night in the town where he used to reside in a room. It was almost 10 a.m. when he returned to his room. The doctor sat in a chair in his residence late at night, contemplating how to improve his appearance as he examined his face in a mirror. He resolved to shave every day, maintain a thin moustache, and always have a grin on his face. These methods would make him seem more intelligent and beautiful. He became aware of a noise. There were several rats in the room, and they were continually making noise.

  • Snake Falls on the Doctor

Suddenly, a snake dropped from above and landed on the doctor’s shoulder. It may have entered the home as a result of the presence of many rats. The snake wrapped itself around the doctor’s left arm, just above the elbow. The doctor’s face was barely three to four inches from the snake’s hood. The doctor stayed completely motionless in the face of imminent danger. He prayed to God and then realised he was a foolish and stupid doctor since he was without snakebite medication. As a result, he would very certainly die if the snake bit him.

  • Doctor’s Escape from the Snake

When the snake rotated its hood, it caught a glimpse of its image in the table’s mirror. The snake unwound (liberated) itself from the doctor’s arm and moved over to the table to examine itself in more detail. Thus, the doctor had a chance to leave the home. He took off running and made his way to a friend’s residence. He spent the night at a friend’s apartment after bathing there.

  • Doctor Shifts from the House

The next morning, the narrator went to his room with his companion to gather his possessions, since he had chosen to quit the residence immediately. He discovered, however, that some criminals had taken most of his stuff, leaving just one of the doctor’s dirty vests left.
